Scrapbook Night

We (the girls around here) all got together for a scrapbook night last night. It was a lot of fun to hang out and chat. I got a few pages done. I miss the old scrapbook nights we used to have my first year here, so I might just have to impalement this as a new monthly tradition!

A Great and Terrible Beauty

I just finished this great book suggested to me by my sister. A Great and Terrible Beauty, by Libba Bray. After I convinced her to read Twilight(which she read in one day), she called me and said that I might like this book as well. It's part of a trilogy, so if you aren't ready to get sucked in then you might want to wait a while on this one. You will get sucked right in once you pick this up!

You can read more on the authors website. She is such a witty woman. She begins the acknowledgements in her second book with this: "Books do not write themselves. If they did, I'd have have a lot more time to spend at Target."
In a nutshell the book is: A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy--jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel.

Finally 2006 is Done!!!

I am finally done with my 2006 scrapbook! I've been working away during Noah's morning naps to get the last few pages done. Gage likes to stand at the table and help me by using my (kid friendly) paper cutter to create the biggest pile of paper scraps one has ever seen. He thinks it is great when I find a picture that I'm not going to use and he can cut that as well. I finished Christmas, our trip to Kansas City and the year in review page to finish it all off! Below are the last few pages (if you click on the picture it enlarges the image).

I finally have a scrapbook space! I have gone from a folding table under the couch and a shoe box full of supplies to a fun looking cart. I found it at Costco for only $30!!! I keep it in the corner of my dining room. I can't wait till we have a house and I can have a bigger space...ahhh, one can dream!!!

Introducing....

I would like to introduce to you Gage the potato bug. He joined our family yesterday. Gage played with him all day and carried him around the house. He also came up with the most creative name in the world for him. (Gage). I'm pretty sure that bug died and got thrown outside last night by an adult in the family, but this morning Gage promptly found another one and this time put it in a nice home. (a toy of Noah's).
Aren't pets great?

Sister

I just found out that one of my sisters, Jeni, is going to come and visit me! YEAH! She decided it was time to come see us since both our hubbies are too busy studying - her husband is a same year Podiatry student at the California school. I'm so excited. We haven't seen her in a year and she has never met Noah. It's been pretty hard on Noah, seeing that she is his favorite Aunt(hehe).
She'll be here the first week in July! Yippie for visitors!

Radio

Perhaps I am a little melodramatic when it comes to the weather. Ok, I admit, I do tend to freak out a little. But I believe with good reason, I grew up in the south, and right now I live in the Midwest, all tornado country. Back in 1999 there was a tornado that tore through Salt Lake City. I don't think that tornado's really have a preference.

When we moved here my Dad send me this weather radio. I now can sleep better at night. (Tornado's can come in the middle of the night). It's a Midland WR 100. You simply program your county codes into the radio and then leave it plugged in someplace in your home. I have mine filled with batteries and plugged in upstairs in our bedroom. It will then alert you (loudly and wake your napping toddler - see post below) if there are any weather alerts in your area. It's the same thing as a public service announcement on TV, but since most of the time I do not have my television turned on during the day, this alerts me first and then I go to my local news station for more information.

If you are seriously looking at purchasing a weather radio you might find better pricing on Amazon or on a weather radio store. If you live in Iowa you might want to keep your ears open, I know last year Hy-Vee did a promotion with one of the news channels and they gave about 500 of these exact radios away. You just had to go into the store and pick it up.

I really think that having one of these in your home is a great idea. Have a little pack of goodies and toys in your closet. Have a plan with your family. Be prepared.

Storm

It's inevitable. I posted a blog about how great summer was and BAM, we had a major storm. Right in the middle of both boys naptime my weather radio started blasting it's annoying loud alarm. Thunderstorm warning. Then tornado warning. It was a wild afternoon. We took our tornado pack (a tote full of flashlights/water bottles/glow sticks) over to our neighbors because she has a larger inside shelter. (You should seek an inside room away from windows and all I have is a small closet).
She snapped these few pictures of the flood in my front yard from her window. My neighbors car flooded and now won't start. The interior of my van got wet, but not ruined. My front door leaked and we had a wet entry way. When we finally walked home the rain was over Gage's knees. But we still have power (others don't) and we didn't see any tornado's (others did).

As promised, we saw a spectacular rainbow following the storm.

Father's Day Pictures

Some of the pictures from the Father's Day book. I know I already posted "about" them, but I didn't post "them" and since it's my blog and they are my boys, so I have the right to brag and say just how handsome they look!

Beavers

If you've seen the Cars movie then you'll understand.
The other day while playing with his cars I overheard Gage say:
"I'm Lighting McQueen! Ka-Chow! Stingin' like a beaver!!"

I was laughing so hard I couldn't break the news to him that beavers don't sting.

Rocket Boy

About a week or so ago, crafty Wade took an empty paper towel roll, some paper and some tape and made Gage a rocket. Gage named it "Rocket Boy." (It is the tall one in the center) One week, and another roll of paper towels later and he made two matching mini rockets.
Well, where else would rockets launch, but on one of mom and dad's bedroom vent? Each night Gage asks for a mission and the conversation goes something like this:
Wade: If you want to go on a mission for your gummies (vitamins) then go land Rocket Boy on the launch pad. (Wade then hides two vitamin gummies for Gage someplace upstairs).
Gage: Take off ready!
Wade: Your mission today is to find a gummy. You should look in the hallway on the little light that we turn on each night. I am mission control and I must stay here at the launch pad in case of emergency. Are you ready for take off?
Gage: ONE, TWO, THREE, blast off ROCKET BOY! (he then runs around frantically, in his underwear, which is even more entertaining, trying to figure out Wade's clue. In this case, last night, it was the night-lite in the hallway, after which he devourers the vitamin and returns to the launch pad).
The process then repeats itself for the second vitamin and then also for this toothbrush.
Bedtime will NEVER be the same.
And all this time I just thought they were empty paper towel rolls. How wrong was I?

Book Swap

Don't forget! Today is the last day to sign up for the book swap. Email me your address and a little bit about reading interests and tomorrow you will get directions and your assigned "swapper." It's a great way to pass along a new or used favorite read, get a new one and maybe meet some new friends!

Don't be afraid if you aren't a blogger or if you only know me through "association of blogs." All our welcome to participate! Sign up!

Re-Call

Gage's dear friend James has to visit the train hospital. A couple other of his favorite engines have to go as well. To say he is a little disappointed that he won't be able to play with them while would be an understatement. He just got James in March and it has been one of his favorites. Unfortunately, it has also been one of Noah's favorites to chew on. What are those symptoms of lead poisoning again?

Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day! Wade and I are blessed with 2 great dads! They are great examples to us and support us in all that we do! We hope that they both have a great day!

This is a peek at what the boys and I got Wade. He is such a fun dad and loves us all. He is patient and kind and always has us laughing. We love him so much!

More Swimming!

Today we ventured out to our complexes pool with a group of friends. Gage was so excited he got to wear his "swim coat" (what he calls his life jacket). Last year he wasn't too fond of the pool unless we were always right there with him or swimming him around in a floaty, but this year he loved it! I was able to sit on the side of the pool and watch him for most of the time. He loved to jump off the edge and swim in circles! Noah still squealed like a little girl each time I made him put his foot touch the water, and then he took a power nap in the stroller - crazy baby. Happy summertime! Maybe I'll get a real tan this year!

What do you do in the summer time...

Today a friend called and invited us to this RAD (yes, I said RAD) park. Every day during the summer there is a free wading pool for the little ones and a great shady toys. We packed a lunch and headed off. This was Noah's' first experience swimming and he screamed like a little girl each time I made him touch the water! It really was entertaining. We had a blast and can't wait to go back.

Book Swap

My friend did a swap on her blog - see my loot below - and I loved the idea. Who doesn't enjoy getting a package in the mail? Who doesn't enjoy putting together fun filled packages for others? Swap Loot

My friend hosted a swap on her blog and I have to admit, I totally scored! Here is how it worked - she set the rules and what we would be swapping. Her theme was 5 senses. Each item you sent had to be from one of the five senses. The items could be homemade or store bought - there wasn't a price limit or minimum. Each participant had a set amount of time for the package to be in the mail and then we all got a package full of fun presents!
The package I received included: A scrapbook album (sight), a fun recorder to include in scrap booking (hear), yummy homemade recipes and bonus homemade apron (taste), Body Shop Body Butter (smell), and homemade cards (touch).
I must confess, my package I sent was not as creatively presented, but I did put a lot of thought into it. It included: Real Simple Magazine (sight), journal and pen (touch), Peanut Butter Hershey Kisses (taste), Candle (smell), and a music CD (hear).

Baby Keegan

The papers were signed today and baby Keegan is here! Keegan Davis (Davis is the birth mom's name) was born Friday at 7:43 am and was a little guy - 5 pounds 11 ounces and 17 inches long. Because he was so little, he has had a little trouble breathing and will be staying in the hospital for a until next week. Prayers for him are appreciated!

We are so excited for Ted, Chandra and Daesha we can hardly stand it! Adoption has got to be one of the hardest things to experience for everyone involved. I can't comprehend the stress Chandra and Ted have been through this past week hoping that the birth mom would like them. Each time I read their blog I cry! At the same time, I can't even grasp the idea of giving up a baby, but I am SO grateful for those who can because there are so many people out there that are awesome parents! I can't wait till we are in Utah so we can see him! Happy Day!

Books

Nerdy, Obsessive, Over-the-top, Passionate - call it what you may, my relationship with reading. (I prefer passionate.) Everyone has their thing - photography, art, science, math (I suppose some might be obsessed with math) - mine would be reading. I used to read text books, but now I read books about parenting, discipline, motherhood, toddlers, famous people, not-so-famous people, places I've been, places I want to go, I read fiction and non-fiction. I read newspapers and I obsess over magazines. If I won a million dollars, I think I would really spend a big chunk of it on books.

I found this fun book...where else, but the library. Wade laughed at me because Gage loves to read and it is full of fun lists of great books for every subject or age! I can't wait to start plowing through my list. It's way cheap on Amzon.com and but I'm waiting for a few more "got-to-have" books so I can get the free shipping! I loved it so much I thought I would pass it on.

Bike Jump

Napoleon Dynamite ain't got nothing on my kids bike jump. It's so sweet. It's at least 3 inches off the ground and made from a card board toy box. Gage thinks that he catches air each time.

7 months

Baby Noah is 7 months old today! How time flies! He is growing into such a funny little boy. He loves his brother and is starting to love eating baby food...although he LOVES to try to eat big people food.

Some other GREAT news that we got this morning is that Wade's brother and sister-in-law will be adopting a new baby boy this Friday! They are such a great family and were blessed with Daesha just 17 days before we had little Gage. You can read more
here or wait until later this week and I will post more! I can't wait till we got to Utah so I can see the little guy!

Vote

This week one of my best friends here in Iowa threw a present party. You can read about it, but the idea was we all brought inexpensive gifts and swapped. I brought 3 books by Jane Austen and I loved them so much that when it came time to switch if we wanted, I totally switched back for my own books!

I came home and quickly started Sense and Sensibility and it is a great read. Here is my dilemma. After reading Twilight and New Moon, I am in the mood for a fast pace book. So cast your vote, should I continue with Sense and Sensibility, or re-read the 6th Harry Potter?

Rain, Rain, Go Away

I feel as if it has been raining in Iowa for a while now. It really hasn't but rainy days are hard. I should clean my house today. On rainy days I don't have the energy to do it. Instead I want to read a good book. I want to watch movies. We are off to the library to find both.

What do you like to do on rainy days?

I found this great website with lots of ideas! Check it out.
