{September in the Books}

I read 9 books in September.  I skimmed one other book, which would have made my total 10, but I really didn't like it (that is why I skimmed it) and I really don't think I can count it as reading it. It's not even worth mentioning.  It looked so good on the cover at the library...guess you can't judge a book by it's cover.

Anyway - 9 books is still great progress towards my goal and I feel like they were overall nine really great books.

~~~
Sense & Sensibility, Rebecca Jamison
This is a cute, clean modern day version of Sense and Sensibility.  I know Jamison has a couple other books, and I am looking forward to reading them.
For Elise, Sarah M. Eden
I was SO excited for this book!  Her last book came out in January and it seemed like it would be forever until this book was released, but it finally was September and the book launch.  I really wanted to go to one of the book signings, but it didn't work out this time.  Last time I took all 5 kids and it ended up in a minor disaster that gave me a headache, and so this time I just decided it would be worth my sanity to just go get the book and skip the signing.
Anyway - I loved this book.  No surprise there!  For Elise introduces Miles and Elise as new characters, but we see a couple older characters from some of her other books as well.  Miles and Elise were childhood friends until she mysteriously disappeared.  As adults they meet again, and the story continues.  There is romance and mystery.
I really love all of Sarah's books and recommend this book to anyone who loves regency romance.
The Good Life for Less, Amy Allen Clark
I was not familiar with her blog, but I found this book at the library and decided to try it.  I loved it!  She has lots of good ideas and the book includes some pretty good recipes.  It was easy to read and I've started following her blog too. If you like mommy blogs, check out her blog and her book too.
The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women, Dawn Dais
This was another library find and I ended up thinking it was so hilarious!  I don't think it would help me run or train for a marathon, but it did make me laugh out loud.  If you are a runner, serious one or not, I think this is a pretty entertaining read.
Rare Bird, Anna Whiston-Donaldson
I saw this book recommended on a blog a couple weeks before it was released and it looked interesting.  It's a memoir of the authors son, who was swept away in flood waters in their neighborhood.  This was a heartbreaking book, but a good book to read at the same time.  I am not sure how I would survive the loss of a child.  This book describes how Anna found light.  I think it was well written and I recommend it, even though it is a heavier topic.  There is some language, if you are sensitive to that.  But honestly, if I had just lost my son in an accident, I would probably have some language too.
Missing Lily, Annette K. Larsen
I read Annette's other book, Just Ella a few months ago and really loved it. A friend told me that she had another book out and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book!  Missing Lily is about one of Ella's sisters. I don't know if this is a series, but I love when books are connected and some of the lesser characters get their own stories.  The story starts out in the middle of action and sucks you in immediately.  If you love princess stories, if you have a tween or teen who loves princess stories, I think both of these books would be great recommendations!
Reaper, Lindsay Hiller
I saw this book recommended on Goodreads, or facebook, I'm not sure.  It looked intriguing and it's a local Utah author so I thought I would give it a shot.  Reapers are girls who have powers to take away or erase bad memories from you, and keep them for themselves, but in this society they are looked down on.  Jenna, the main character, has been shunned because she is a reaper, but she wants to make a new life for herself.  There is a little romance, a king, a prince and some action.  It's such an interesting book, and so hard to describe! I am really anxious to read more of this story in the second book.  It will be released in the sometime this winter.
The Secret Keeper, Kate Morton
I downloaded a sample of this book a couple months ago and was not that interested after the first chapter. Then my sister handed me her copy and said she had the same problem, she had tried to read it before and couldn't get interested, but then picked it up again and got sucked in.  She thought I should give it another try.
Honestly, maybe the the first half/first third really did not grab my interest, but I kept on reading because my sister said the ending was really good.  About halfway through I could not put the book down.  The ending made it all worth it. I don't even know how to describe the book without giving it all away.  There were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming and I really enjoyed the way this book turned out.  I'll have to keep Kate Morton on my list of authors to try again.
Hands Free Mama, Rachel Macy Stafford
I have mixed feelings about this book.  I was really excited to read it.  I think she has some great points and some great ideas.  I need to be better at putting down my phone and enjoying the moment with my kids.  I know that.  But this book made feel guilty for everything.  I don't need more mommy guilt in my life.  The author has two kids.  It's great she can lay down with each child individually every night at bedtime and spend 30 minutes with each one talking about their day.  But if I did that bedtime would take 2 1/2 hours to get everyone to sleep. That's a bit ridiculous.  Bedtime at our houses consists of all the kids on one side and dad on the other and they throw balls at each other while we occasionally sing a primary song or two.  It works. Maybe that is an exaggerated point, but I think when you have 5 kids you have to be pretty good at balancing your time.  At least I think I am pretty good at balancing my time.  (maybe I'm wrong?) But sometimes I have to make phone calls for church while waiting in the school parking lot, instead of reading a book to my 4 year old.  I still find time to read to him.  Sometimes the older kids like to read to him.  Then it's like bonus points because the big kids are reading and the younger kids are getting read too.  Sometimes the kids have to watch tv so I can work out.  or take a nap.  Sometimes I read a book (like this one) while they play and make a huge mess in the playroom.  And I tell them that I am reading and that they can play on their own.  I am a horrible mom. I don't think it's bad that I am not there every second of every hour of every day.  Our phones don't come to the dinner table.  Either do the legos.  We spend a lot of time playing outside.  We have weeks where we go unplugged and don't watch tv. We turn our phones completely off every week for church.  But I am not perfect.  Eli always likes to tell me to put my phone down and look at him.  I look at facebook and instagram too often, I don't need a book to tell me this.
The other thing that bothered me about this book is that it was all directed towards her kids.  I think we could read this same book and apply it to ANY relationship. Our spouses, our parents, our siblings, our kids.
Again, I think the book had some good ideas.  It is set up in a format so you can read it over a year and it has exercises you can work on every month.  I think it's a good idea and maybe a book worth reading if you are struggling coming up with ideas to help you go hands free.
Maybe I just feel so much guilt because I know I could do better at this.  But I can always do better at everything.  geez.  anyway, maybe someone else can read it and love it and write a better review for me:)
~~~

Nine books down this month.
The total for the year is 74.
That kinda makes me want to go read a book right now since it's technically still september and make the total 75.
HA!
(but it's tuesday.  the busiest day of the week for me and that is just NOT going to happen)

Three more months to go, hopefully I can make it to 100 books!

Don't you want to take a ride with us?  I know you are jealous of the chaos that is inside our van after the kids have been at  church.  Dancing, wiggling, hollering, and lots of crazy talk.  I always want to tell them to quiet down, and Wade always reminds me how good they have been for the past three hours.
Good point.

Wiggle on.

Last night I went with my sister and niece to the Women's Conference my church holds twice a year.  It was a great meeting.  My sister and I both whispered "yes!" when they announced that President Uchtdorf would be the closing speaker.  Maybe we shouldn't my have favorites.  But he is our favorite.  (I think Sister Marriott and her southern accent is going to be one of my new favorites too!)

So anyway, my favorite message was from President Uchtdorf.

"Heavenly Father is constantly raining blessings upon us.  But it is our fear, doubt and sin, that like an umbrella block these blessings from reaching us."

The message is this: let us close our umbrellas and let the blessings shower down!

Sound simple.  But maybe not always.  I know I really need to work at this.

I needed this message.

After conference we headed over the The Blue Lemon for a yummy dinner.  We had such a good time.  We laughed so hard we were crying.  As we were leaving I spilled my refilled drink all over my lap.  Then we laughed even more.

Have I mentioned how much I love living by my sister?
Now if my mom, my other sisters and sister in laws could just move here I would be one happy camper.
Come on...I know you all want to move here and watch me spill drinks on my lap after women's conference!
It would be fun, I promise!

So glad we have this new tradition.

It kinda rocks.

~~
Seriously, though, besides the whole spiritual message side of the evening, one of my highlightsof the day came when I got home and showed the boys this picture of the receipt from dinner.  You should have heard the boys giggle at "butt" squash soup.

boys.
I have to love them.
they make me smile.

Sunday Photo: 36

We took a drive up the canyon this afternoon.  It was rainy and drizzly the whole time.  It made me miss Washington.  The leaves are changing.  It's a beautiful place that we live in.

Sunday rides are always an adventure with us.  You never know what kids are going to say.
or do....

Can you spot 4 kids?  They were supposed to run down the sidewalk and run back.  Instead the boys decided to throw rocks in the water too.  Then Noah got his shoes stuck in the mud.  I took pictures and let him figure it out.  Because I'm an awesome mom like that.

We stopped at the top of the Alpine Loop and took a Sunday Photo.

Eli couldn't figure out how to get on the fence.

Avery was happy to be out of the car.  She was worried about the clouds.  She said the fog was "deadly fog."  Then she taught Lucy to say "Die  Die!  Die!"

More nose picking from Noah.

Lucy is cold.

Wade humored me and got in the picture.  Then he said I needed to be in a picture and he took a bunch of pictures of my bum. Nice.

Gage wanted us to pay him $5 to jump in a huge puddle.  We told him we would not pay him, but we would laugh.  Then we told him he would need to pay us for new shoes.  He didn't really like that idea.

These six people make my heart happy.
Sunday afternoon rides are pretty much the best.

Important things, like the Miss America pagent, are on tv tonight.  So this blog is going to be fast and all done on my phone.

~~~
We had stake conference this morning.  If you aren't familiar with that, basically it's a regional meeting that is a 2 hour service and it's held twice a year.  The meeting today was broadcast to all church congregations in two counties.  It was a really good meeting.  I really enjoyed a couple of the talks and came away with a couple things I really want to work on.  I got my notebook and pen out to take notes, then Avery convinscated it and she worked on this:
But kids...kids and these meetings are a challenge.  5 kids under 10 is a challenge in ANY meeting...and this one was two hours long.  They did pretty well.  Ate half the snacks before the opening prayer.  You know, the usual things.
During the intermediate hymn I let them all go and get a drink.  Eli turned to me and asked if it was over yet.
My response:
"Nope, just halftime"
Ha!  I didn't realize it until it came out of my mouth.  But I did feel like I was sitting in the middle of some sort of kiddie/toddler football game with kids all over me.
But they are fun.  And crazy. And a challenge that makes me think church is a football game. But they also make me smile (when they are all alseep).
~~~

Now back to Miss America.
Miss Arkansas made the top 15!

{Pancake Sausage Muffins}

I love saving time in the morning.  Sometimes it can just be such a crazy house getting everyone ready and everything done.  This is one of my favorite recipes that is super easy to whip up in bulk and freeze for later...it is one that we love to have in the morning to save time.  I posted about it a few years ago when I posted about breakfast items, (click for link...I have no idea why I complained about a 9am school start time, it's 7:50 now!) .....but I never posted the recipe.  Since I was already sitting at the computer trying to type it all into MyFitnessPal, I figured I might as well post the recipe.

(Do you know about MyFitnessPal? My sister has been telling me to use it forever and I finally decided to try it.  I am loving it!)

Every morning the kids can even take care of themselves, all you have to do is pop a couple of these in the microwave for 45 seconds or so and eat!  Sometimes with syrup, sometimes without!

I do have to admit that they look nicer with crumbled sausage, the link ones always look funny to me.  But sometimes I just go with what's on sale.

Sausage Pancake Muffins
Today I made some with pancake batter, and some with Martha White Honey Bran Muffin Mix.  They are both really great!

1 package of Martha White Honey Bran Muffin Mix
2/3 Cup Milk
Dash Cinnamon
Cooked link sausage (or cooked crumbled sausage)

Mix the muffin mix with milk and add a dash of cinnamon.  Spray muffin tins with cooking spray or use muffin liners.  Fill 1/2 full with muffin mix, add 1/2 of sausage link (or a spoonful of crumbled sausage).  We really like mini muffins.  Bake mini muffins at 350 for about 15 minutes.  Bake regular size muffins at 425 for 14-17 minutes.  One package makes 6-8 regular muffins or 12-18 mini muffins.  I double the batch and make 36 mini muffins plus a couple regular size muffins.

Cook completely and then freeze in a gallon freezer ziplock bag.

~~
Another variation is the pancake version.  Same idea.  You can even cheat and use pancake mix from the store.  I have totally done that before.  Or you can use your own favorite pancake recipes.  Here are two of my favorite:

Pancakes:
1 1/2 cups flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/4 cup milk
1 egg
3 tablespoons melted butter

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.  Pour in the milk, egg and melted butter, mix until smooth.

Whole Wheat Pancakes:

2 cups whole wheat flour,
4 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
2 eggs
2 cups plus 2 tbsp milk
2 tsp vanilla

In a large bowl sift together all the dry ingredients.  Pour in the milk, eggs, and vanilla and mix until smooth.

Wade taught Lucy to chant B-Y-U while they were waiting for me after church today.
She sang it over and over all the way home.
Then she threw all her noodles at me and fell asleep in her chair with a piece of ham in her hand.

sometimes sundays are hard work
and being cute is exhausting
but we are going to have to work on that BYU chanting,
because we can't have her going around town chanting that...
now can we?!

{First Day - Pre-K}

Today was finally Eli's day!  The last of the "first days" for our family this year..
the first day of pre-k!

Eli has been so excited to start preschool.  He is going to go to the literacy center where Avery did preschool last year.  It's a free program (it is not headstart) and we think it's a fantastic resource.
Fantastic.  Awesome. Great.
I cannot say enough good things about it.
Avery loved it last year and Eli went every day to drop off and pick her up.  He watched her and listened to her stories about all the fun stuff they do, and waited patiently until he turned 4, so he could have his turn.  He is on the younger side, just barely making the age cut off, so we'll see how it goes.  But after today, I think he is ready.  He had such a great time!

He woke up today and gave me a big hug.  I asked him if he knew what today was and he said,
"It's my BIG day mom!"

yep, little buddy.
it's your big day.
(when did he get so big?!?)

Eli said he was not nervous, or scared.
I asked him if he knew what nervous meant and he said
"your tummy feels funny, my tummy feels like it wants more chocolate milk!"

Eli jumped out and after we signed him in he headed off without even looking back.  He knows all about the Literacy Center and Avery has been filling him in on names and all the nice helpers this  whole past week.

After preschool Eli had a huge smile on his face.  He was so happy.  He made a little guy that he colored to look just like him.
He said his favorite part of pre-k was:
"doing the person craft".
His least favorite thing was:
"doing the disco.....just kidding, there was no disco mom"
What did he learned today:
"about the letter U"

He was so excited and can't wait to go back.
He had his favorite lunch (lunchables) and got to watch Paw Patrol for the afternoon.

~~

Phew.
4 "first days" over and we are well on our way to a busy schedule of just running kids here and there all year.
Eli has preschool in the morning, so I have Lucy and Avery at home.
Then Avery heads to school and I have Eli and Lucy.
(they nap)
The older boys are early birds, and Avery is a later gater.
(they like to get out early, and kindergarten is only later schedule, so I didn't have much choice with that one)
So that means I have 4 drop off/pick up times just at the elementary school.
Add preschool on 2 days:
8,9:30,11:30, 12:35, 2:15, 3:30
(thank goodness for carpools!)
Looks like Lucy and I are going to be spending a lot of time in the car this year.
And this does NOT even include any extra activities that they want to do!
Maybe we'll just install a cooler in the back of the van so I can store my diet coke there too.
I think I'll be needing a lot of it.

{August in the Books}

August was the month I decided to kick it in gear.
13 books!
Besides, if I am going to make my goal I have to get cracking!
Plus, when the boys were all gone on the hunt it was so quiet around here, that I was able to read 5 books that weekend alone.

Wade and I redboxed the movie at the beginning of the month and it made me want to re-read the books.  I still love them in order, 1,2 and then 3.  I really don't like Allegiant much at all.  It seems to be like that with most trilogies, the first book is awesome, the 2nd so-so and the 3rd is kinda a let down.

I bought this to read to the kids, and then read it myself first.  I thought it was good, but not as good as I hoped it would be.  The kids have really love it so far.  And it really helps them calm down at bedtime and they have really got into the story.  We'll have to see if they want to read the second one when we finish, it does end in a cliff hanger.

This is a short little novela/book/chapter that goes along with the Wonder book.  I loved Wonder.  It is still one of my favorite books.  The Julian Chapter explained a lot and it was good.  I was glad that we got to read part of his story.

My sister in law wanted me to read this book. It is a non-fiction, true story. It tells the story of a woman who suffers from bi-polar disorder and her journey through medications and then finding a vitamin that works for her.  (My sister in law sells this vitamin, EMPowerplus Q 96).  I am not a doctor, or a scientist and I have really am not sure if this supplement/vitamin can cure everything that it says it can, but reading this book made me very grateful that I don't suffer from bi-polar disorder.

I think this was a fun book to read.  It made me want to keep running and he was pretty entertaining.  If you are a runner, or a beginning runner, or want to start running this might be a book you want to look up.

I really love Money Saving Mom blog.  I was really interested in reading this book too, but I was a little disappointed that so much of the book was focused on couponing.  Maybe I was disappointed because I don't coupon? ha!  If you want to start couponing than this is an awesome resource you might want to look for.  I think she does have great ideas in that area.  I just don't think I can wrap my head around couponing at this point in my life.

My dad read this book and really enjoyed it, so he sent us a copy.  Wade is reading it too and really finds it interesting.  I don't think I thought it was as interesting as my dad, but it was interesting. (if that makes sense?)  If you are interested in history you would really enjoy this book.  It really made me think and I learned a lot.

I saw this book and thought it might be a good book to read and eventually have around as a reference book.  I was disappointed in it.  It really didn't have much advice targeted just towards women.  It seemed pretty dated too.  If you want a good running book, read the other one I read this month, or the running books I read in July.

My sister loaned me this book on my kindle and she thought it was good.  I thought it was really fun book and it totally sucked  me into the story.  Although, describing it is a little challenging...it is about a magician who uses paper.  Exactly that.  But it's so much more!  It even is a little bit of a love story too.  The author's website really cracks me up too.  I am looking forward to some of the other books coming out by her soon.  I think if you liked A Great and Terrible Beauty you would like this book, or vice-versa.  I also noticed that it is free on Kindle Unlimited right now too.

I saw this book at the library one day.  It's a short read and reminds me of the movie 17 again a little bit.  But it was clean and cute and I really liked it.

This could have been my favorite book I read this month..or this summer!  I was laughing out loud the whole time while reading it.  If you love Jim Gaffigan you will totally love this book.  If you have not heard of Jim Gaffigan, you need to look up the hot pocket guy on youtube.  He's a (clean!) comedian who has 5 kids..and lives in NYC in a 2 bedroom apartment.  This book tells mostly about his family and adventures that 5 kids brings.  I seriously loved it and laugh when thinking about it.  I will be re-reading it again and again.

~~

My book count total for the year is now 65.  I need to read 35 more books between now and the end of the year to make my goal!  Eik!  That seems like a lot, I hope I can do this!

{August}

August was a busy month.
We had to fit every last drop of summer in before school started.

~~

Wade took the triplets down to LaVell Edwards Stadium to the free movie night.  He said it was fun, we'll have to try it as a family next year.

We watched our cousin Charlotte perform in the play Cinderella.  Who knew quiet Charlotte could steal the show?  She did fantastic!

We had tons of summer rain storms this month.  One Monday night my cute neighbor called and suggested that we go on a bike ride for family night.  It was only 30 percent change of rain...but the predictions were totally wrong!  Half way through our bike ride a there was a HUGE downpour. We were laughing our heads off.  We tried to wait it out under a bridge, but after a couple minutes the kids just decided to go for it.  I stayed in the back with Eli, and his little legs kept peddling and peddling, but we were just completely soaked by the time we got back to the trucks.

After it poured a double rainbow came out and Eli pointed it out and said, "I sure hope Avery sees that Mom.  She would love it"

It was seriously one of the best nights I've ever had.

We got lots of chances to play in the rain this month:

Grandma and Grandpa came to town to watch my sister's kids.  Grandma brought the little 3 kids new pajamas.

I am still working in the mornings.  It's not really a bad gig, it might be early, and not glamorous, but I get to be home all day long with the kids.  One day I dropped a HUGE ladder on my leg.  The picture doesn't do it justice, it was a BIG ladder and it left a huge dent.  I still have a bruise.  I also learned how to change light ballast.  I had to google "light ballast" to even know what they were talking about when I learned how to do it. It's some electrical part of the light. I think Wade should be impressed, right?  (I did fix the light at the office the other day.)  The bright light in the picture is the one that I fixed!

With Grandma here, Avery got her hair braided.  I really need to learn how to do this.

We've had a couple "Swig drinks and the park" mornings.

Wade had his 20 year class year reunion.  20 years!
Wow, someone is old.

We had an open house at the office.
It was a great event.

A couple more things on our summer list - Cabelas:

summer craft - making a new wreath for the door:

And Lucy has proved that I can never-ever be alone.
"Mom, are you in there?  Mom?  Mom?  Mom? Mom?"

We headed to Aunt Pam's house to play legos.

I gave the 3 boys hair cuts for school.

We are putting a new roof on the house.  For some reason they delivered the stuff on a Sunday night (although we didn't even need it until later that week).  The kids were fascinated with the HUGE truck and crane that showed up with the stuff.

Our garden has been going CRAZY.  I've given away vegetables like crazy.  One day we set up a table and gave away "feey" vegetables.
(Avery was so proud of the sign that she made (and sounded out) herself)

I've been running.  But it's been getting really dark in the morning at the time I can run, so in stead of running in the dark by myself, I ride the stationary bike that we have downstairs.  It's not as great as biking, but it's still better than nothing.  In August I ran 31 miles and biked 45 miles.

I've been getting a little faster too.  It was cooler one night so I decided to go for a run after dinner and got stuck in a crazy wind/rain storm.  It ended up being the fastest time I've ever done...which calls for a selfie, right?

I have two races I really want to run in September, and I just spent a little of my money I got from working this summer and got very really good deal on a treadmill from a friend.
(I even ran on it this morning.)

Wade's been busy with the garden and the deer he got during the hunt.  He strung 150 hot peppers to dry the other night.  They are all turning red and then he plans on crushing them up and using them in salsas and different recipes.  Doesn't he look super happy about this?
HA!

He made deer jerky a couple weekends ago. It's pretty good stuff, although it looks kinda gross in the picture... and I don't even like jerky.

Back to school means it's time to do our annual footprints.  I have a couple years of these prints.  I wrote the kids names on each canvas after I took the picture, because honestly the boys are getting so where I can't tell them apart in size, I just know their favorite colors.

Gage earned his Webelos badge this last month.  He was pretty excited about that.

Football started!
My friend sent me a surprise package that included an Arkansas Razorback shirt!  Woo Pig Sooie!

And our house is now divided between red and blue teams:

I love football season and a little reason to throw a party and make a bunch of food.  Even if Wade likes to dress our family in the wrong color (blue).

Avery Ann is such the little helper.  She loves when Friday's roll around and it's the big house cleaning day.  She loves to help in the kitchen and help me make dinner.  It's too bad Lucy pressed her face to the window and blew a huge kiss on it 5 seconds after Avery cleaned it.

We finally decided to make some room and move the 7 ft bean back into the house.  I've learned that I can live without a lot of our stuff actually, but the kids have really missed their bean bag.  And I have to admit, it's super fun and comfy to play on too.

And last, but not least, the project that seems to be taking forever: the roof.  Because we had so much rain this month it's been hard to schedule a time to get the roof done on the house.  But this past weekend the guys finally put it together and started the work.  The hardest part is taking the old roof off, but it really needed to come off before another winter.  We were so thankful for all the helpers that came over this weekend.  My job was to keep the kids inside and make sure there was enough food and drinks.  (my favorite job!).  After 36 gatorades and 24 water bottles I lost count.  They have half of the new roof up, it looks like this will be the project blogged about next month too.

 We are all looking forward to falling into more of a schedule in September.  I would love to think that means things might slow down a little bit...but who am I kidding?  I don't think my life will slow down until I'm 96.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.
