Best end to 2009

The best end to 2009 that I can think of is the news that my mom is getting out of the hospital this afternoon and coming home! YAY!

She likened this ordeal to Gilligan's Island. All she signed up for was a 3 hour cruise - she got a lot more than that.

And on that note, my friends, I will end my blog posts for 2009.

365 Question...

I've been busy each night working on finishing my 365 book. I don't think I'm going to finish it by the end of the year, but it is fun filling it all in and looking at how much everyone (particularly Avery) has grown. I don't really like my handwriting, but it's nice to have a book that will include it. My regular scrapbooking is all digital or computer journaling.

Right now I'm focusing on finishing each week as simply as I can and then I will go back through and add embellishments after I'm done.

This is my question - if anyone still reads my blog. Wade lost our camera in May. I used my mother in law's camera for a while and then when we got back here I found our old camera in storage and was able to continue taking a picture a day, but still - I have a lot of holes.

So - do I, try to fill in the holes with pictures that I find on the Internet that go along with things we did that day (I kept a journal so I can try to google a lot of our activities and see what I find?)

Or, take blank cards and draw stick figure picture?

Or, fake it and fill it in with random pictures of our daily life - the cereal we eat, the routine that we have?

Or a all of these?

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Becky Higgins has another kit out for next year and I am so excited about it. I want to buy one, but have promised myself that I have to finish this one first.

Christmas 2009

Well, honestly, Christmas 2009 wasn't our favorite but I don't want to complain. It could always be worse.

First off - My mom went her gall bladder removed on the 15th of December, she had some leak from her bile duct that caused pain and infection and she is still in the hospital. They live about 40 minutes away from us so we've spent the past two weeks going down every other day or so to visit with her, help my Dad at home or do things at the house. Because of H1N1 the kids aren't really supposed to be in her room, but the good thing is that on Christmas the nurse let Gage and Noah come up and see her (even though she was in ICU) and sing her a song. I think she really liked it. She is starting to do better and hopefully will be able to come home sometime this week.

Second, I got sick this past week with mastitis. I've been trying to get Avery to nurse less often and just been too busy. Thank goodness for a HUSBAND who can call in antibiotics for me! Four days later I finally have started feeling more like myself.

Third, Wade was on call and had to go in EACH and every day. Not something that happens a lot at this program. In fact, it was the first time he's been on call that he has had to go in every day.

Fourth, we had a few other things happen in the past week not really blog worthy yet. I will later, but let's just say - they put a damper on our festive moods. No worries, things happen.

However, no matter our moods, our circumstances or what happens to us, we have the knowledge of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. He came into this world, taught us and then died for us. It's an amazing story. Christmas is the time of year you should put all your worries and troubles aside and celebrate. Because we know this, we truly are blessed no matter what happens.

~~
On to the re-cap of festivities.

Each year my mother in law gives us a nativity. I collect them and I believe my count is around 15 now. This is the one I got this year and I love it! I got it at Thanksgiving when we were there visiting, but couldn't post about it because my other sister-in-laws hadn't got theirs yet.

It's the same brand as last years - I love it so much I had to post another picture of it!

I also got the stars to finish off my Willow Tree set. I love them, and although I've packed away all my nativities, I kept the stars out. They are great.

Some of our plans this week got pushed aside so we could go visit my mom. I had planned on doing gingerbread houses as a family, but didn't get to it. Then my neighbor dropped off a house as their neighbor gift -it came with the decorations and everything! We just had to make the frosting. It was perfect! I left the boys to do it on their own while I went and nursed Avery, they were giggling up a storm and quickly found out why - they had dumped the entire bottle of sprinkles on the house. So nice!

Christmas Eve I had a party planned, but or course, plans change. My parents were going to come up, our neighbor, her kids and some friends that are at a different residency in the area. Well, we spent the day at my parents house cleaning and doing laundry for my dad. Wade was at work. I was really REALLY feeling sick from the mastitis. We decided to forgo the party and save it for New Years. I was able to get this prepared before collapsing on the couch..cheese fondue was on the menu as well, but it just didn't happen. The cake was the favorite part.

Happy Birthday Jesus! Gage did the candles and was very worried about getting the right number on the cake. I told him just to use the whole box. It looked great!

Our Santa cookies and letters that we had wrote earlier this month. I don't know why Noah wanted a sticky thing for the wall, or what that even is but it's what he asked me to write down.

After our 'party' we did a scavenger hunt for the boys to find their Christmas Eve Jammie presents. They had to model them.

The Sunday before Christmas we were talking about Christmas in Sunday School (duh) and I was inspired by a story that a couple told. He said that one year they told all of their children on Christmas Eve that they were supposed to pretend all of the presents had been taken away, all of the money was gone and they had to use things in the house to create presents for each other. One person made a pie, another a simple toy, things like that. He says it was so much fun helping each child create something. I really thought it would be something fun we could try. So without buying anything and within one day, each kid had to make something for another kid.

Avery made Noah a monster truck track. Gage made Avery a bottle rattle. And Noah's present was the hit - he and Wade turned a board and some caster wheels into a skateboard! Gage had a very hard time staying inside when they were in the garage that day. He could really hear Noah just giggling and having fun.

Christmas morning we found our Santa gifts! A big box of Legos!

Wade had such a hard time finding TIME to buy presents this year. I usually buy our presents on sale throughout the year. The kids don't get a ton, and what they get doesn't cost us much that way. I know they will get older and start asking for more expensive items. Right now little things get them so excited, I love it. However, sometimes it leaves Wade out of the fun, so Christmas Eve he was in the stores buying them extra presents. He bought Gage a Bionicle.

Wade also got Noah some Star War men.
The skateboard was such a hit. They rolled around on it all day, and still do. They ride it on their feet, their tummies and their bums. The wheels go all the way around so it's really funny to ride.

Avery was up all night Christmas Eve, but she slept in Christmas morning. Despite the picture, she was excited about her presents. Maybe the surprise was a little disappointing to her since she had already played with them all night when she was up screaming.

Tough-Man Gage with his new skateboard.

Last but not least, they got the coolest marble run from Grandma and Grandpa Christiansen. It took a while for us to find the perfect one but this one is cool. They can build all kinds of different runs and they love it!
The boys were blessed and we all had an enjoyable morning and day.

We're very excited to have Grandma Bullard come home so we can celebrate Christmas with them soon.

Merry Christmas

Unfortunately I don't believe I will be able to finish getting the rest of my Christmas cards out in time. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas. It's my hope that this Christmas season we remember the true meaning and spirit of the season. I can't tell you how many times in the past two weeks I've seen grumpy, unhappy shoppers, heard car horns honking, people rushing, and people worried about all the wrong things this time of year. I think if we were a little bit more patient, loving, kind, gave smiles to more strangers, wished more people Merry Christmas, and found ways to do small acts of service each day that would be the best Christmas present Christ could ask for.

Merry Christmas!
Love,
The Christiansens

getting Christmas craft on

Each year I try to give the kids one homemade gift. This year I decided I would do PJ pants for all of them to open on Christmas Eve. The boys picked out this fabric a couple months ago, I would have picked something a little more festive, but at least they will like this. Avery gets plain pink because I had it on hand and didn't have to go to the store! They all have new white undershirts that will be wrapped up to go with them. They were all super easy and probably took me 2 hours total for all 3. I "strongly dislike" pinning and cutting out patterns, so that part took me along time.

My friend Anne-Marie is in one word, AWESOME. I don't know how she does it all but I always get little packages of fun things that she has had time to craft and make. I'm jealous of her paper craft abilities. Saturday I was having a little bit of a rough day, I checked the mail that afternoon and found out I have a package from Anne-Marie. Inside I found a box full of nine of these little beauties. Each one is different and I love them. The picture doesn't do them justice.(You know, I'm such a talented photographer and all!) She found them on this great website - full of fun paper craft ideas. I might just have to try my own hand at these later this week...and keep them in mind for next year!

Congratulations!

My newest niece arrived this morning. Little Madison Elizabeth was born after 35.5 hrs of labor at 9:30am, 7lbs 7 ounces and 20" long.

Congratulations to my baby brother Ken. Now he has a baby of his own to take care of! Aren't her cheeks the cutest ever? I wish I were there to to hold her!

A bigger congratulations goes out to Suzanne, who survived the 35.5 hours of labor! Way to go!

10 Months

Avery Ann turned 10 months old on Saturday.

I say it every month, but Avery is such a joy. She is a really happy baby and loves to smile and giggle. She crawls around and loves to chase her brothers, particularly, Gage. Avery loves to eat anything she can get her hands on, but baby food. She really loves squash and yams. She loves to do it all herself and if you attempt to feed her with a spoon she will try and grab it from you so she can do it herself. She still nurses every few hours, but can totally go without it if I'm not around. She went about 30 hours when we left her with my parents this past month for our retreat. She thinks she is really cool when she drinks from her sippy cup.

She loves the Christmas tree and has pulled it down on herself three times...our tree is only 3 feet tall and has nothing breakable on it, so when this happens she just laughs and smiles at herself. Each time I stand it back up again and try to find the tree an even higher home. She loves to play peek-a-boo. She loves her two blankets. She loves crawling through leg tunnels. She loves pulling herself up to furniture and pushing around our bar stools. She can wave, clap and say mama and dadda. She babbles a few other words, baba, nana, etc.

I'm so sad that in two more months she will turn one! She has really been a joy to this past year. I can't wait to see her on Christmas morning when she gets to play with wrapping paper!

Avery Ann makes us smile each and every day.

Leaks

Just in case your gold Diet Coke springs a leak in the car (brought on by being dropped out of the door by a 3 year old at school) and you don't have a towel on hand, just grab a diaper. Size four, Parent's Choice, works great. If only they would work this well on my kids!

Of course, you could just open it up and dump it out. But who thinks of that and where would the fun be?

Snow

We've had frost and some cold (for here) days here the past week. There were some snow flakes when we left church today - just enough to make you feel a little excited about snow, but not enough to do anything about it.

Wade had this conversation with Noah this afternoon:

Noah: "Daddy, it's snowing."
Wade: "Yeah, I know"
Noah: "It's going to get deeper, and deeper, and deeper and deeper. And then I'm going to make a snowball and hit you in the face!"

Thanksgiving Trip

Wow, December is almost half over and I haven't even blogged (with pictures) about Thanksgiving. We had a great time in Utah surprising Wade's family. Since the 3rd year resident in Wade's program is from Canada and she had already celebrated Thanksgiving there a few weeks prior, we were able to NOT be on call! YAY! It's the only holiday we get off this year, so we took full advantage! I still haven't got the video downloaded from the camcorder, but at least I have some pictures. I got a new camera on black Friday. I'm excited to get back in the habit of taking a picture a day!

The kids were really good in the car, 14 1/2 hours in one day isn't an easy task but maybe it's a little like going into labor, not fun while you are doing it, but once you get there and it's only been one long day, it's worth it. We turned Avery around so she could watch movies on the DVD player. That helped a lot - although we all have the Baby Einstein movies memorized now.

Thanksgiving Day at the Christiansen's was a blast. We haven't been there in 7 years and we have really been missing out. There were so many people and the kids had so much fun, we ate ourselves silly. Gage, Noah and Avery had so much fun playing with their cousins.

Random picture of cute Avery Ann.

Of course a trip to Grandma's wouldn't be complete without some fun gifts. I got my girls night out presents - I am so excited about my new nativity this year, I just can't post pictures of it until everyone else gets theirs, I don't want to spoil the fun!

Last, but not least, Wade was pretty happy when we found out we would be in Utah for the BYU/Utah game. He watched it with his brother and Dad. I felt horrible because I didn't get the laundry done in time and he had to wear a RED shirt that day instead of BLUE. At least it was just a Farmall shirt, not one of his Utah shirts. He was really happy with the outcome of the game. I had a good time being the opposition in the room and cheering for the Utes. Someone has to stick behind the school we both went too!

We are really thankful for my sister Kathy and that we could stay at her house. Gage had a fun time every night going back to Charlotte's house for a sleepover. Of course the trip went by too fast and we weren't able to see and visit with everyone we wanted too. Hopefully we can make it home again this summer!

Festival of the Nativity

I'm so excited to be a part of this even this year. I just got home from taking and setting up 13 of my nativities.

Last year I attended the first Festival of the Nativity in Tacoma and it was so awesome.

This year they have well over 500 nativities, live music and various artwork of Christ's life.

The event is this weekend:
Friday: 6-8pm
Saturday: 10am-8pm
Sunday: noon-8pm

The event is FREE and welcome to anyone. It's located in Tacoma at the church building on 12th and Pearl.

I can't wait to go this weekend and see the whole thing!

Ironic

A little bit ironic that I bought a new camera on black Friday and now I've lost the camera cord that I need to upload pictures. My memory card drive doesn't work anymore on my computer in case you were wondering why I don't just do it that way.

So much to upload too - We surprised Wade's family for thanksgiving this year! We drove to Utah all in one day last Wednesday. The kids were great considering it was 14.5 hours in the car. We stayed at my sisters and within 5 minutes of us driving into Lehi city limits Wade's mom called us. She joked with Wade that he should just hop on an airplane and come see her for thanksgiving. She wins an award for her mothers intuition! Wade didn't let up that anything was going on, he tried to act very vague on our thanksgiving plans, but he isn't the best liar. I was sure that she would see right through it.

The next day was a blast, we showed up at the door step and sent the boys in. Betty was floored and speechless. She really thought we had just hopped on an airplane! The video is great - when I get it uploaded.

We had a really nice visit, although it went by way to fast and drove back on Monday. Again, the kids were great, the weather was nice and we couldn't complain about traffic.

I hope to post pictures and the video soon. I'm swapped with Christmas activities. I cannot believe it's December! Does anyone know what happened to 2009? I'm wondering what happened to the whole year.

Residency Retreat

Thanks to my parents who are AWESOME and watched all our kids for us, Wade and I were able to go to the annual Residency Retreat Wade's program has each year. They go each fall to the Skamania Lodge, which is down in the Columbia River Gorge. It pretty much rained the whole time we were there, but regardless, it's gorgeous!

I couldn't resist and had to take my "I heart feet shirt" Too bad I couldn't get enough courage to wear it outside of my room. I guess there's always next year.

We drove down Friday night and Saturday morning Wade had to get up bright and early and attend a meeting where he had to do a presentation. I was a little bummed I didn't get to see his presentation (besides him practicing it) but I'm really glad I didn't have to sit through all the others. I spent the morning lounging around reading. I was actually able to finish a whole page without anyone interrupting me!
After the morning meeting got out we were free for the afternoon.

We went out to lunch with Micah and Alison (the 2nd year & his wife) and again - it was so nice to not be interrupted - we hang out all the time with them, but have 7 kids between all of us! No kids was such a treat! Then we drove out to Multnomah Falls for a little hiking.
I am SUCH a good photographer. The water fall is coming right out of Wade's head.

I know we aren't in Cullen (vampire) country, but the weather sure made it look that way.

Wait - WAIT, did you see that? I swore I just saw a vampire run by and then climb the tree.
Oh, no, it was just Wade. Edward had NOTHING on this vampire pose. Did I mention how much I love Wade?

After Edward, I mean Wade, climbed some trees and impressed us with his stealth-vampire speed and strength we met up with some more vampires, Rosalie and Emmett. I mean Alison and Micah. This place was CRAWLING with vampires. You should have seen everyone sparkle in the sun.

Okay then we reached the top and the vampire fun ended for some serious time. Just kidding.

Wade showed us his lumberjack competition skills by doing some cool tricks on this log.

This was probably the only serious picture I got the whole day. We were laughing and having such good time. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard - oh wait, it was this morning when Noah did his boottie dance for me - but really, we did laugh and have such a great time.

After hiking up the falls and back we headed back to the lodge and Wade and I relaxed by the fire while I read some more and Wade burnt his tongue on hot chocolate and people-watched. We finished the evening off with a nice dinner put on by one of the medical supply companies. The food was so good - roast beef, salmon and duck!
After dinner we made our departure. Next year we will stay two nights -most people do, but since Elder Scott was coming to speak at church today and I was worried about little Avery we drove home that night. One night was still a lot of fun.

I didn't know while we were gone but my mom got sick and had a gall-stone attack during the middle of the night at the same time that Avery decided to be a a stinker and screamed at Grandpa and Grandma for 4 hours. They really are the BEST parents in the wold, because every time I called they just said everything was fine and wouldn't really tell me how things were going. The boys had a great time. Saturday my mom and dad took everyone to a model train show where after standing in a "very long line" according to Noah, they were able to ride a toy Thomas the Train. It made their weekend, and the fact that they got to eat at McDonalds and Dairy Queen in one day.
It was a relaxing trip and Wade and I had such a fun time with Micah and Alison. I already can't wait until next year!
